**Speakers:** Ira Sherman, Joseph Cammarata, Stephen Ollar, Allan Siegel

**Ira Sherman (00:02):** I would say that Chaikin, Sherman, Cammarata and Siegel has a completely different outlook on cases that other people think are garden variety automobile accidents, because to the person who is involved in that accident, that’s not garden variety, that’s altering their life.

**Joseph Cammarata (00:21):** First of all, we don’t advertise. People come to us by word of mouth, either from defense lawyers, from insurance companies, from colleagues at the bar. They know that we have decades of experience in the personal injury field. They know that what we bring to bear is a group of lawyers that work and non-lawyers that work as a team to make sure we understand what the nature and the extent of the injury is. We make sure we understand and can express to a third party just what those injuries are, and we work to obtain the most compensation that we can for an individual.

**Stephen Ollar (01:04):** What we do a lot of is discovery, not just discovery of the facts of the case, but discovery about insurance. It may be that the individual was operating the vehicle for an employer, and if they were acting with what we call the course and scope of their employment, then there could be potentially additional coverage that would cover a person for those injuries.

**Allan Siegel (01:27):** We’ve been handling car accident cases since Don Chaikin founded this firm over 50 years ago. Since we spend a lot of time and we have a lot of those cases, we have developed a level of experience and knowledge that I think is very unique in our field. There aren’t many law firms who can say that they’ve been doing this type of work for over 50 years.

**Ira Sherman (01:52):** I care enough to look to determine who this person is and how it affected them, and that takes up a lot of my conversation with our clients.

## What Are The 100 Deadliest Days of Summer?

Summer in Washington, DC, is full of excitement, offering countless opportunities to explore the city’s historical landmarks, vibrant neighborhoods, and outdoor spaces. From taking in the awe-inspiring beauty of the National Mall to kayaking along the [Potomac River](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potomac_River) or enjoying concerts at The Wharf, there’s no shortage of activities for residents and visitors alike.

However, this surge in activity also brings heightened risks. Crowded hotspots like the Tidal Basin, [Georgetown Waterfront](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgetown_(Washington,_D.C.)), and Rock Creek Park can lead to traffic congestion, increased pedestrian accidents, and moments of carelessness fueled by the season’s energy. While DC’s summer attractions make it a prime destination, they also underscore the importance of staying alert to ensure everyone can enjoy the season without incident.

The “100 Deadliest Days of Summer” refers to the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when traffic fatalities rise significantly. During these 100 days, the roads are statistically more dangerous, making awareness and precaution essential for everyone.

At Chaikin Sherman Cammarata & Siegel, we are committed to ensuring that everyone gets home safely every day this summer. With the “100 Deadliest Days” posing heightened risks on the road, it’s more important than ever to stay vigilant. If you or a loved one has been injured in a car accident, know that you don’t have to face the aftermath alone. Our experienced team is here to fight for the justice and compensation you deserve. Schedule a [free consultation](https://www.chaikinandsherman.com/contact-us/) today and take the first step toward protecting your rights and your future. Stay safe, and remember, we’re here for you when you need us most.

## How Much Do Car Crashes Increase in Summer in Washington, DC?

Statistics reveal a significant rise in car crashes during the summer months in Washington, DC. According to recent data, the District experiences approximately a 20% increase in vehicular accidents between June and August compared to other times of the year.

### Teen Crashes

[Teen drivers](https://www.chaikinandsherman.com/car-accidents/why-are-less-washington-dc-teenagers-getting-their-drivers-license/) are particularly at risk during the summer months in Washington, DC, contributing to a notable rise in crash statistics. Studies indicate that accidents involving teen drivers increase by nearly 15% during this period, often attributed to inexperienced driving, distracted behavior, and an uptick in social activities.

### Fatal Crashes

The summer months see a troubling increase in the number of [fatal crashes](https://www.chaikinandsherman.com/car-accidents/when-someone-dies-in-a-car-accident/) in Washington, DC. Data indicates that fatal accidents rise by nearly 15% during June, July, and August when compared to the fall and winter seasons.

## Why Are There More Car Accidents in The 100 Deadliest Days of Summer Than Other Seasons?

The time from Memorial Day to Labor Day, often referred to as the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer,” poses a significant threat to road safety. During these months, the combination of increased travel, riskier driving behaviors, and seasonal conditions creates a perfect storm for accidents. Understanding the factors behind these trends is essential for implementing effective safety measures.

### Increased Traffic Volume

With schools out and families embarking on vacations, the roads are busier than usual during the summer. More drivers on the road inevitably lead to a higher probability of collisions. Weekend road trips, tourist traffic, and crowded highways can overwhelm infrastructure, resulting in accidents caused by congestion and frustration.

### Higher Rates of Teen Drivers

Teen drivers, many of whom are inexperienced, significantly contribute to the risks during the summer. With school obligations paused, teenagers spend more time behind the wheel, often driving late at night or with peers in the car. The risk of distracted or impaired driving increases drastically among this age group, amplifying accident rates.

### Alcohol Consumption and Impaired Driving

Summer months are marked by holidays, barbecues, and parties, often involving alcohol consumption. [Impaired driving](https://www.chaikinandsherman.com/car-accidents/drunk-driving-accidents/) incidents spike around celebrations like the Fourth of July. Many drivers underestimate the impact of alcohol on their abilities, leading to more fatal crashes during this time of year.

### Distracted Driving

Summertime [distractions](https://www.chaikinandsherman.com/car-accidents/what-is-distracted-driving-and-why-is-it-dangerous/) multiply, from updating navigation systems for new road trips to managing restless passengers on long drives. Additionally, drivers may engage in more dangerous behaviors such as eating while driving, texting, or scrolling social media, increasing accident risks significantly.

### Weather-Related Challenges

While summer is associated with clear blue skies, sudden thunderstorms and slick roads can appear unexpectedly. Drivers unprepared for these rapid changes, especially in regions prone to flash flooding, can quickly find themselves in hazardous situations.

### Longer Daylight Hours

While longer days might seem like a safety feature, they can actually work against drivers. Extended daylight hours lead people to stay out later, creating fatigue for both themselves and other drivers on the road. [Fatigue significantly impairs reaction times](https://www.chaikinandsherman.com/car-accidents/why-is-drowsy-driving-dangerous/) and decision-making ability, contributing to accidents.

### Relaxed Driving

Summer’s carefree atmosphere often brings a relaxed approach to driving, but this mindset can be dangerous. Drivers may become less vigilant, assuming the clear weather and open roads reduce the need for attentiveness. This false sense of security can lead to drivers exceeding speed limits, getting distracted, or engaging in dangerous driving behaviors.

By examining these critical factors, it’s clear that summer driving comes with heightened risks. Raising awareness and promoting safer driving behaviors can help reduce the number of accidents and save lives during the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer.

## How Can I Keep My Family Safe During The 100 Deadliest Days of Summer?

Keeping your family safe during the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer requires proactive planning and making smart decisions every time you get behind the wheel. By adhering to the following safety practices, you can dramatically reduce risks and protect your loved ones.

- **Always Wear Seat Belts**: Ensure everyone in the vehicle is buckled up before driving. Seat Belts are the first line of defense in preventing serious injuries during accidents.

- **Avoid Distracted Driving**: Eliminate distractions like cell phones, eating, or adjusting in-car controls. Focus solely on the road to maintain complete awareness at all times.

- **Stick to Speed Limits**: Excessive speed reduces reaction time and increases accident severity. Drive at a safe and legal speed to keep control in all situations.

- **Don’t Drive Impaired**: Never operate a vehicle after consuming alcohol or drugs. Impaired driving is one of the leading causes of summer accidents. Before heading out, have a plan to get a sober ride home.

- **Practice Defensive Driving**: Anticipate the actions of other drivers and be prepared for sudden changes in traffic conditions or hazards.

- **Prioritize Vehicle Maintenance**: Regularly check tires, brakes, and fluid levels to ensure peak vehicle performance and reduce the chance of breakdowns.

By adopting these strategies, you can foster a safer driving environment and set a strong example for responsible road behavior. Highway safety needs to be a priority for all drivers, especially during this dangerous time.

## How Can Parents Talk To Teen Drivers About Safety?

Parents play a critical role in shaping safe driving habits for their teenage drivers. By setting clear expectations and enforcing practical rules, parents can significantly reduce the risk of accidents, instill responsibility, and build confidence behind the wheel. Here are some essential rules to establish with your teen driver:

- **Set Clear Driving Hours**: Restrict driving to daylight hours, especially in the early stages of learning, to reduce the risks associated with nighttime driving.

- **Limit Passengers**: Allow only a limited number of passengers or none at all to help minimize distractions while driving.

- **No Phone Usage**: Enforce a strict no-texting or phone usage rule while driving to keep attention on the road at all times.

- **Promote Defensive Driving**: Teach the importance of anticipating other drivers’ actions and maintaining a safe following distance to avoid potential collisions.

- **Monitor Speed Limits**: Stress the importance of obeying speed limits and adjusting speed based on weather and traffic conditions.

- **Enforce Seat Belt Use**: Insist on wearing seat belts at all times—both the driver and all passengers—for maximum safety.

By implementing these rules, parents can lay a strong foundation for safe driving practices, helping their teens develop critical skills that will keep them and others safe on the road.
