Holiday Accident Risks & Safety Tips

By: Dan Hausman

The holiday season is a festive and wonderful time. People get a chance to take a break from work, spend some quality time with their families, and engage in family traditions. Sadly, the holiday season is also a time when people must stay vigilant.

According to statistics from the Department of Transportation, 22% of all vehicle crashes in the U.S. – and 16% of the fatalities – are due to rain, snow, sleet and ice and other severe weather. People also get stuck in vehicles due to inclement weather for extended periods of time. Another common type of injury during the holiday season is a slip or fall on snow or ice.

It is very important for you to be aware of the dangerous conditions that occur during the winter months and to take appropriate measures to protect yourself and your loved ones from an injury. To help you stay safe as you enjoy the holidays, our personal injury team at CSCS has put together some helpful accident prevention and response tips.

Be Prepared

  • Walk carefully on snowy or icy walkways and wear appropriate footwear.
  • Stay indoors to the greatest extent possible during severe weather.
  • Stay on main roads and avoid back roads
  • Keep bagged salt or sand in your vehicle and at your home and place of business. Make sure to use the salt or sand at your home and place of business.
  • Keep a blanket, gloves, bottled water, shovel, first aid kit, flashlight and cell phone charger in your vehicle.
  • Top off all fluids in your vehicle.

It is also important to be able to react appropriately if you or a family member are involved in a car accident or a slip and fall. You can pursue compensation if an injury occurs at no fault of your own. To do so most effectively, you want to gather as much information as possible about the incident.

React Accordingly

  • Collect names and insurance information of diver’s involved in a crash.
  • Obtain a responding police officer’s name, badge number, and contact information.
  • Collect the names and phone numbers of witnesses.
  • Take photographs of the snowy or icy conditions that contributed to a slip and fall and make sure they depict the lighting at the time of the incident.
  • Take photographs of the snowy or icy conditions that contributed to a crash and the damage to the vehicles.
  • Take photographs of signs cautioning of icy or snowy conditions and of any measures that were used to attempt to mitigate the risk of a fall such as salt or sand.
  • Report any slip and fall to the owner or manager of the premises at which the fall was sustained.
  • Seek appropriate medical treatment as soon as possible and ensure that you accurately report all injuries sustained.
