Fig & Olive Salmonella Outbreak: 60 Diagnosed Cases, Over 100 More Possible

By: Allan M. Siegel

The Fig & Olive restaurant in CityCenterDC has reopened its doors after the DC Department of Health shut the restaurant down following a salmonella outbreak that sickened numerous diners. According to officials, no food samples were found to have contained the harmful bacteria. The restaurant had been closed since September 10th.

Here is what is known about the outbreak so far:

  • At least 10 people who dined at the Fig & Olive contracted salmonella illness. There are also 60 other reported illnesses and roughly 150 possible illnesses tied to the Fig & Olive being further investigated by officials.
  • According to officials, the two items that may have contributed to the illnesses were truffle fries and mushroom croquettes, both of which have been removed from the menu and the restaurant.
  • Health officials were unable to determine a particular ingredient that could have contributed to the outbreak, and are working with the CDC and health departments in other jurisdictions to further investigate the source, including imported Mexican cucumbers that have sickened hundreds of people in 31 states.Fig & Olive Salmonella

The restaurant was closed shortly after diners reported symptoms that suggested salmonella infection earlier this month and was given permission to reopen after meeting a number of requirements. These include destruction of all food inventory, rigorous health training, and proof of cleanup and sanitation of the kitchen and entire facility.

Several victims were hospitalized as a result of the salmonella illnesses and many others experienced negative symptoms that impacted their lives and caused missed days of work. Those who experienced these damages may be entitled to a recovery of their losses by filing a personal injury claim, as the restaurant can be held responsible for causing preventable harm to patrons.
