What is salmonella?

Salmonella is a dangerous bacteria that can cause fever, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and other flu-like symptoms within hours after infection. In some cases, salmonella can cause severe symptoms that may require medical treatment. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, salmonella causes approximately 19,000 hospitalizations and over 400 deaths in the U.S. each year.

Although salmonella infection can happen to people of all ages, young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are highest at risk. Salmonella infection can be fatal in cases where the infection spreads from the intestines to the blood stream, especially if antibiotics are not administered promptly. Additionally, some victims develop long-term pain in their joints – or reactive arthritis – that can last for months or years and which can lead to chronic arthritis.

Do you have a case?

Salmonella outbreaks linked to food, drinks, or restaurants can be caused by several things:

  • Contaminated food (commonly produce)
  • A food handler with salmonella infection (salmonellosis)
  • Contaminated water

Although the CDC has reported a large salmonella outbreak involving imported Mexican cucumbers that have affected over 340 people in 30 states, it is still unknown whether the cucumbers are the cause of illnesses linked to the Fig & Olive.

Regardless of the exact cause of the contamination, victims who suffer illnesses may have the right to file personal injury claims. These claims will give victims the opportunity to recover financial compensation for their damages, which may include pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost work wages, and more.
