Hyundai and Kia recently admitted that they overstated the fuel economy of approximately 900,000 vehicles for model years 2011 to 2013 sold in the United States through October 31, 2012.
This admission came as a result of investigation conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency due to consumer complaints about overstated mileage estimates on the window stickers of new Hyundai and Kia vehicles. The investigation found that most Hyundai and Kia vehicle labels were overstated by one to as much as six miles per gallon.
The Hyundai models with inflated mileage estimates include the Accent, Azera, Elantra, Genesis, Sonata, Tucson, Veloster and Santa Fe. The Kia models with inflated mileage estimates include the Optima, Rio, Sorento, Soul and Sportage.
As reported in the New York Times, an official from the EPA said that “[c]onsumers rely on the window sticker to help make informed choices about the cars they buy.” The company has announced a plan to reimburse car buyer. However, this plan may not adequately compensate victims, and consumers have may have rights, under individual state laws, including the District of Columbia Consumer Protection Procedures Act, which are not addressed by the this plan.
