New Year’s Resolutions that Can Keep You Safe in 2019

by | Dec 28, 2018

New Year’s resolutions often include items like getting the promotion at work, picking up a new hobby, losing that holiday weight, volunteering more, or learning a language. While all of these aspirational goals clearly have great benefits, this blog post offers a few additional suggestions of resolutions for you to consider adding to your list.

Analyze Your Insurance Coverage

Review your automobile, home, life, and health insurance policies with your insurance companies. Be sure your policies have been kept up to date with any changing laws as well as the changes in your circumstances. The last thing you need is to be unprotected if an injury occurs. A great example of a type of insurance you should consider is PIP insurance, which is something Attorney Matthew Tievsky recently wrote about, here. Another recent insurance change to check out is the uninsured motorist coverage system in Maryland.

Ensure Your Technology is Current

Every year there is new and better technology that can help ensure your safety. Technology costs vary quite a lot based on the technology itself; some of the advancements below may not be for everyone.  New cars are quite pricey but are often equipped with electronic stability controls, anti-lock braking systems, tire pressure monitoring systems, adaptive headlights, and collision warning systems that offer a safety improvement for many. Bluetooth technology is often a cheaper means of making some safety gains in one’s vehicle.

Bicycle and running gear that help keep you visible to drivers is becoming more stylish, comfortable, and easily incorporated into existing gear. Computer virus and spyware software is another product that is constantly evolving and capable of protecting one from damage. New phone applications allow parents to better watch their children at home to ensure injuries are prevented. A resolution to check out technological advancements can pay huge dividends in the long run.

Safety Checks

Take your vehicles into an auto mechanic for a checkup. Your mechanic should be able to make sure your wheels, brakes, lights are in good working order. Same with your bicycle. You should also check out your home and property to flag potential safety hazards.  Examples include loose materials like stair railings, carpets, or bricks on walkways, trees that have the potential to lose branches, and plumbing and electrical equipment. You should also check your carbon monoxide and fire alarms and ensure you have items in your home like fire extinguishers in case of an emergency. A simple addition to your resolution list can go a long way.
