Holiday Safety Tips for Labor Day Weekend

by | Sep 2, 2016

Labor Day Weekend is here, and if you’re one of the millions of Americans with plans to celebrate the long holiday weekend, Chaikin, Sherman, Cammarata & Siegel, P.C. would like to remind you about the importance of making a safety a priority in whatever your plans may involve!

AAA estimates that more than 38 million Americans will be traveling this weekend. Whether you’re headed out on a road trip or need to commute to a party or other destination, be aware that roads and highways will see a significant surge in traffic. For this reason, being vigilant and safe behind the wheel is crucial in reducing risks of preventable car accidents.

  • Avoid distractions – Avoid texting, using a phone, and other distractions that can take your focus off the road, especially when traffic gets congested and you may need to stop suddenly.
  • Obey the rules of the road – Driving safely, at a reasonable speed, and within the law is important when there is an increase in traffic and more non-local drivers.

Before you hit the road with your family, make sure your vehicle’s fluids, tire condition, tire pressure, and lights are all in good condition and functioning properly. If your vehicle is older, especially if it does not get good gas mileage, consider renting a new car with the latest safety technology. Also, make sure all luggage and roof rack cargo are stored and tied down securely. Bringing your car in for an oil change and a quick multi-point inspection is a great way to ensure its in safe shape to travel.

Have plans to cool off in the water? Keep yourself and your children safe with these important water safety tips. If you’re having a backyard barbecue, it is also important to practice safe grilling techniques:

  • First, remember to clean your grill on a regular basis to prevent grease fires.
  • Second, your grill should always be placed on a level surface, and should be kept a safe distance from all structures, decorations, patio furniture, hammocks, etc.
  • Third, if you are grilling with gas ensure that all gas connections and hoses are tightly secured and in good condition. If you are grilling with charcoal, ensure that the grill is in an open and well-ventilated area to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. The coals should always be carefully disposed of in water or a metal container.
  • Lastly, if a fire does occur, please remember that it can rapidly double in size each minute. Cover the grill if you can do so safely, call 911, and evacuate the area.

We hope these safety tips ensure you have a safe holiday. Chaikin, Sherman, Cammarata & Siegel, P.C. wishes you and your family a happy Labor Day weekend!
