Federal Safety Inspection Reveals a Multitude of Dangers in the Metro System

By: Allan M. Siegel

You likely remember that Metro shut down for a full day this past March, as federal safety inspectors investigated the Metro system for safety violations. In fact, for weeks federal inspectors have been conducting a safety “blitz” to uncover problems with the system. Now, the results of the inspections are in – and they aren’t good.

According to findings by the Federal Transit Administration (“FTA”), the Metro system is plagued by numerous safety violations, endangering both passengers and employees. For example, inspectors found:

  • Emergency walkways blocked by construction debris;
  • Non-functioning fire extinguishers;
  • Non-functioning emergency power shut-off switches;
  • Emergency and safety signage covered in filth;
  • Train operators violating speed restrictions

The FTA was recently granted oversight authority over the Metro rail system. It remains to be seen whether this federal intervention will be enough to fix Metro’s broken safety culture.
