Pedestrian Injured After Being Pinned Under Greyhound Bus in NW DC

By: Allan M. Siegel

A pedestrian was seriously injured following a bus accident in Northwest DC earlier this afternoon. According to officials at D.C. Fire and EMS, the man was struck by a Greyhound bus near 7th Street Massachusetts Avenue shortly after 1:00 pm.

Authorities report that the bus was making a left onto 7th when it struck the man, who was then pinned under the rear wheels of the bus. It took first responders 20 minutes to remove the man and transport him to a nearby hospital. Officials report that he is currently in critical condition.

Investigators on scene shut down traffic around Mount Vernon Square and diverted motorists after the victim was rushed to the hospital. No information has yet been released about the bus driver or the cause of the accident.

This incident comes only hours after another bus accident in Bethesda, Maryland resulted in the death of a motorcyclist. In that crash, which we reported on earlier today, the rider was struck and killed by a Ride On bus.

News of today’s incidents is alarming, and although the collisions are still under investigation, they send clear messages that we need to ensure the drivers of these buses, both private and public, are driving in a way that safeguards the public. Less than two months ago, Partner Joseph Cammarata secured a $4.5 million jury verdict on behalf of a pedestrian who was also struck by a bus that was making a left turn. Similar to this afternoon’s incident, our client was also trapped under the bus - under the driver’s side tire - and suffered multiple serious injuries.

Fortunately, Partner Cammarata was successful in demonstrating that the bus driver failed to pay attention and negligently increased speed prior to the crash. Additionally, he was able to demonstrate that the Alexandria Transit Company was negligent in retaining the bus driver, who had a poor safety record and several documented crashes on the job.

We hope that investigators pay close attention to the driver’s involved, at the very least to ensure they were obeying the law, and ensuring that they be removed from duty, if they were not. We understand that accidents can happen for many reasons, but we also know it is essential to victims and their loved ones to determine if an accident was preventable, and if at-fault parties can be held responsible.
