Rabbi Barry Freundel Fired from DC Synagogue Following Voyeurism Charges

By: Ira Sherman

In October, prominent DC Rabbi and religious leader Barry Freundel was arrested and charged with voyeurism after it was alleged that he had been spying on female congregants. According to police reports, Freundel would use hidden cameras to secretly videotape woman as they used the mikvah, a Jewish ritual bath, operated by his modern Orthodox synagogue Kesher Israel. Today that synagogue announced Rabbi Freundel has been fired as its spiritual leader.

Kesher Israel Freundel

Kesher Israel, which is located in Georgetown, had merely suspended Freundel from his position after his October arrest. Today's announcement was made after the synagogue's board of directors finally voted to terminate Freundel. According to the synagogue's officials, he will have until January 1st to vacate the rabbinical residence. Freundel is also scheduled to appear at a criminal hearing on January 16th.

Commenting on Freundel's termination from his position at Kesher Israel, Partner Ira Sherman stated, "It's about time that the synagogue took this action. The permissive and deferential treatment it demonstrated towards Rabbi Freundel over the years has been part of the problem."

Freundel has been charged with six counts of voyeurism, but authorities believe there may be additional victims. Visit our previous blog to learn more about the ongoing investigation and what our firm's Partners have to say about the case.
