Mayor Gray Signs Athletic Concussion Protection Act Bill

by | Oct 20, 2011

Mayor of the District of Columbia Vincent Gray signed the Athletic Concussion Protection Act into law on July 27, 2011. The law requires that coaches remove youth athletes performing in any sport from the game in the event that there are signs or symptoms of concussion. The youth athletes will not be permitted to return to play the sport until the player receives clearance from a healthcare provider certifying that the youth is fit to return to play.

Additionally, coaches will be required to receive training in the signs and symptoms of concussion. We are pleased that the District of Columbia is one of the first jurisdictions in the country to protect their youth athletes against the consequences of head injury while engaged in sporting activities. We congratulate Mayor Vincent Gray and the members of the Council of the District of Columbia for unanimously approving this legislation and implementing it as quickly as possible.
