Liability for negligently or carelessly entrusting your vehicle to another individual

We have previously discussed the fact that you could be held liable for the negligent acts of your employee or your agent, even somebody that was just running an errand for you. Another way you could be responsible for the acts of another individual is if you carelessly provide a motor vehicle to an individual who you know presents a danger to others on the roadway. Examples of individuals who you know present dangers to others on the roadway are individuals who are unlicensed or have been repeatedly involved in accidents resulting alcohol or other drug abuse. Additionally, if you give your vehicle to another individual who you know or have reason to know is impaired, for instance by drugs or alcohol, even if they don't have a past history of bad driving, you could be responsible for negligently providing this dangerous weapon on the roadway to that individual.
