Common Causes of Motor Vehicle Collisions

We read about the unfortunate loss of 16 year old Anthony Feather , from King George County, Virginia, who died on May 9, 2010 after being thrown from a motor vehicle. Anthony and his friends went to their prom on Saturday night at King George High School. While an investigation is still pending, it is believed that the driver was speeding when the vehicle left the road and struck a tree.

We continue to read about the increasing number of fatalities that occur as a result of motor vehicle collisions. We must all take measures to ensure that we are safe on the road so that we do not injure ourselves, and more importantly, others on the roadway.

The six most common causes of motor vehicle accidents are (as reported by

1) Driver Distraction- Drivers are often distracted by using the cell phone,, adjusting the radio, and reading while driving.

2) Driver Fatigue- According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it has been reported that approximately 100,000 accidents are caused as a result of drowsy drivers. Symptoms of driver fatigue include frequent yawning, and varing speed of the vehicle.

3) Drunk Driving- According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 16,654 people were killed in alcohol related crashes in 2004.
