On Monday January 5, 2015, Partner Joseph Cammarata filed an amended complaint against Bill Cosby in federal court. The complaint amends an original lawsuit filed on behalf of Tamara Green on December 10, 2014. Ms. Green alleged that she was sexually assaulted by Mr. Cosby in the early 1970s, and that her name and reputation were subsequently tarnished by Cosby's legal team. The amended defamation lawsuit includes more women who allege they were sexually assaulted by Mr. Cosby - Therese Serignese and Linda Traitz.
According to the lawsuit, Ms. Serignese was an aspiring model when she was allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted by Cosby in 1976. The lawsuit says that after coming forward to publicly accuse Cosby of misconduct, Cosby, through his attorney, denied the accusations and in effect branded her a liar.
The complaint also provides the story of Ms. Traitz, who alleges that in 1970, she was offered pills by Cosby before being sexually assaulted by the comedian. In November 2014, Traitz publicly announced her allegations on Facebook. The complaint says that Cosby, again through his lawyer, publicly denounced Traitz' claims, in effect branding her a liar.
The defamation lawsuit provides these women, and other alleged victims, the opportunity to litigate the merits of their respective claims. According to Partner Cammarata, these women who claim to have been harmed now have a forum where the truth can be tried.
