On February 10, 2011, Senior Partner Ira Sherman , testified in his role as Vice-President of the Brain Injury Association of DC ("BIADC") before the DC Council Committee on Health in support of the Athletic Concussion Protection Act of 2011. Partner Joseph Cammarata , who is President of BIADC, drafted the legislation and worked with members of the DC Council for the introduction of the legislation. The legislation contains three key components. First, and athlete is to be removed form play or practice is suspected of sustain a concussion. Second, a return to play or practice will only be permitted if the athlete receives written clearance from a licensed healthcare provider trained in the evaluation and management of concussion. Third, and an equally important component of the legislation is the education and awareness of coaches, school personnel, athletes and parents, of the risks, symptoms, lingering effects and treatment of concussion. Mr. Sherman told the Committee that as community leaders, professionals, educators and parents we have a special responsibility to protect our children from the known risks of concussion and an important step in fulfilling that responsibility is the passage of the legislation.
