There are several diagnostic and treatment modalities for supervising or
treating traumatic brain injury:
CT Scan – CT scans, or computed tomographic scans, utilize x-ray technology
to provide imagery of the brain. Doctors can analyze the imagery to determine
if a brain is swollen or hemorrhaging, or if brain tissue has been compressed.
MRIs – Magnetic resonance imaging tests can provide physicians with detailed
images of various structures in the head, including bones and brain tissue.
Oxygen – Brain injury victims who lose consciousness can be treated with
oxygen via a mask, nasal tube, or with the assistance of a ventilator machine.
Medication – Health care providers may use various medications to treat victims
who have experienced traumatic brain injuries. These medications can help
with regulating blood pressure, treating pain, limiting swelling of the
brain, and preventing seizures.
Hypothermia – Medical research has provided some unique insight into effectively
treating severe brain injuries through hypothermia, or decreased body
temperature. Scientists and medical professionals are still investigating
the safety and efficacy of hypothermia treatments.
Long-Term Care – Aside from initial treatment, brain injury victims will often
require long-term rehabilitative care and treatment to improve cognitive
abilities and functioning.
