by | Mar 5, 2014

Chaikin, Sherman, Cammarata & Siegel is pleased to announce that the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) has marked this March as Brain Injury Awareness Month. By doing so, the BIAA creates a great opportunity for everyone throughout the country to learn more about traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and their impact on victims and families.

brain injury can happen anytime, anywhere, and to anyone – brain injuries do not discriminate. To help local residents throughout the Washington, DC Metro area learn more about TBI, here are a few brain injury facts:

  • A concussion is a brain injury. It can occur from a blow or a jolt to the head, resulting in a change in a person’s mental status, such as feeling dazed, disoriented or confused. One need not suffer a loss of consciousness to suffer a concussion.
  • Each year, 2.4 million Americans – including 475,000 children – experience a traumatic brain injury.5.3 million people live with life-long disabilities as a result of TBI.
  • Annually, 52,000 people will die from TBI, 275,000 will be hospitalized, and 1.4 million will be treated and released from emergency rooms.
  • Brain injuries may be caused by falls (35%), traffic collisions (17%), workplace accidents (16%), assaults (10%), and other causes (21%).
  • TBI is a contributing factor to one-third of all injury-related deaths in the U.S.
  • Approximately 75% of brain injuries that occur each year are concussions or other types of mild TBI.
  • Brain injuries are often unpredictable in nature and affect individuals differently.

Committed to Brain Injury Advocacy

Because a brain injury can happen anytime to anyone, it is important for all members of our community to be aware of these facts, as well as the various services and support groups available to brain injury victims. At CSCS, our lawyers have been long-time advocates for brain injury victims and have helped many clients who experienced TBI and concussions secure the compensation they rightfully deserved.

In addition to helping victims who experienced TBI through no fault of their own navigate the personal injury claim process, our firm has also made additional efforts to create comprehensive resources for brain injury victims in our region. Partner Ira Sherman and I, for example, co-founded and hold positions with the Brain Injury Association of Washington, DC (BIADC). Mr. Sherman is also Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of the BIAA. The BIAA has identified the law firm as Preferred Attorneys in the brain injury field.

I also drafted the Athletic Concussion Protection Act of 2011, which became law, which is designed to protect youth athletes in the District of Columbia from concussions in sports. We expect that the Mayor will soon proclaim March as Brain Injury Awareness Month in Washington, DC.
