On Monday, July 20th, police and transit officials reported that a MARC
train collided with a dump truck on the tracks in Montgomery County. In
light of recent train accidents making headlines, including the Philadelphia
Amtrak derailment in May, authorities responded promptly to the incident and communicated
openly with public officials and local citizens.
Here are some additional details about Monday’s MARC crash:
- Authorities report that the crash occurred around 4:45 pm on Monday, when
MARC Brunswick Line train 875 hit a dump truck stopped on the tracks at
an at-grade crossing between Silver Spring and Kensington stations. The
dump truck is owned by CSX and was performing maintenance on an adjacent track.
- Of the more than 600 passengers on board, no serious injuries were reported
- although some passengers initially complained of being hurt, but declined
transportation to the local hospital. The driver of the maintenance truck
also refused treatment, according to authorities.
- As a result of the crash, service was suspended for approximately three
hours, and was restored on Tuesday, though with delays and crowding.
It is fortunate that Monday’s incident did not result in tragic consequences.
Although no serious or fatal injuries have been reported, it does not
mean that people were not hurt. Often people wake up the following morning
with back injuries or neck injuries, that they did not feel at the scene,
or felt were to minor to be reported.
