  • Call for Traumatic Brain Injury to be Classified as a "Chronic Disease"

Posted By Chaikin, Sherman, Cammarata, Siegel, P.C. || 21-Oct-2011

Dr. Brent Masel, president and medical director of the Transitional Learning Center in Galveston, Texas has recently written that there is an incorrect notion that traumatic injury to the brain will heal. Dr. Masel points out that although many of the 1.7 million TBIs sustained annually in the US are injuries from which a patient recovers and are cured, more than 125,000 of these are permanent and incurable. Dr. Masel points out that scientific data exists to support the fact that TBI impacts multiple organ systems. Dr. Mazel suggests that TBI should be classified as a disease and, therefore, would result in a facilitation of the treatment and a continuum of care which would be paid for by medical insurance.
