While most expectant parents go to great lengths to baby proof and child proof their homes, as children get a little older and more active, one danger that is often overlooked is that of small children falling out of windows, particularly those located on homes' upper levels. Injuries suffered in these falls are severe and at times can be fatal. The saddest cases are those when earlier warnings or complaints about the windows have been ignored.
Here are some tips:
- Be sure screens are secure and children are not allowed to play near open windows.
- Chairs and other furniture should be moved away from windows so children can't climb up and press upon the screens.
- If possible, open windows from the top, not the bottom.
