As I sat down to write my first Presidents message, I looked at many of my predecessors first messages to see what important issues were facing our organization over the years. The content of these messages were all very similar. We are, and always have been, an organization which has a solid mission and admirable goals to improve our public image as trial lawyers, to provide education and support to our members, to fight against legislation which would restrict the rights of our clients, and to promote friendship and camaraderie among our members. However, what struck me when I reviewed years of newsletters (which I have collected in anticipation of one day writing this column) was how strong our association has grown over the years. This undoubtedly is the result of the tireless efforts of our leaders, but most importantly, because of the willingness of our members to get involved and make personal commitments of their time, energy and financial resources.
For example, our newsletter has historically acknowledged the dedication of members who make personal financial contributions to our organization beyond their regular dues obligations. A mere 10 years ago the newsletter acknowledged all of our sustaining members. The number of sustaining members alone has almost doubled. This does not include the fifty-six members of our Leaders Club, who give a minimum of $1,500 per year to support the work of our association and its affiliates.
Our general membership numbers have also multiplied by leaps and bounds, thanks to the efforts of our membership committee over the years. The committee last year, led by Joe Cammarata and Denis Mitchell, continued that strong tradition and we are stronger than ever. Our educational programs last year were consistently sold-out as a result of the spectacular work of the entire education committee, and its chairs Scott Sonntag and Karen Evans. Legislative Committee chair, Jim Taglieri, has followed in the very big footsteps of Jack Olender, and the legislative committee continues to be active and ambitious on all fronts, analyzing and getting involved in any legislation or regulation which has the potential to impact the rights of our clients.
But that was the past. We need to maintain that effort and intensity in the upcoming year. The new officers of your association, myself, President-Elect Laurie Amell, Vice President Annie Kaplan, Treasurer Adam Leighton, and Secretary Karen Evans have been planning over the summer and have exciting new ideas for expanding membership, reaching out into the community to improve our image as trial lawyers, and associating with our fellow Bar Associations. We need your help! Join a committee, join the Leaders Club, or just to come to a dinner meeting to find out about the great things our organization is doing, and how you can help. I look forward to working with all of you in the year to come.
